Mungo Powney - Spirit of Colour
Graduating in 1994 from Newcastle University, Mungo Powney has gone on to exhibit his work with several UK galleries, in group and solo shows. His arresting use of colour, and his use of domestic settings, suggest the fond memories of intimacy and are imbued with a sense of the happy power of contentment and stability.

“I see myself in the tradition of The Nabis, trying to feel colour rather than just observe it. I respond very much to the intimacy of Vuillard or Sisley. When I paint I am constantly planning several layers of different colour in order to match the power of the colour in front of me. The subjects I choose are very important to me and when I work I constantly change the composition and objects within it in order to create an emotional harmony. I think that a good painting should be rather like a battery in which the artist has trapped a certain power.”
