Janis Ridley was born in Co Durham and studied Sculpture at Newcastle-upon-Tyne School of Art followed by painting at Exeter College of Art, where she graduated in Fine Art in 1976. Until 1994 Janis had been painting in oils and exhibiting throughout the UK including Beaux Arts Bath, and the Royal Academy. In 1995 she began to focus solely on making sculpture, and was elected as a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors in 1998.
Janis's sculptures integrate her experience of drawing the figure with a deep interest in dance and myths. She is intrigued by the way sculpture allows for an idea to be made visible and given form. Her work is centred around human emotional experience, such as feelings of love, tenderness and power. Janis's work is held in private collections in the UK, France, Australia, and the USA.
